Thrift Stores are the way to go :) You can find amazingly cheap vintage clothing/accessories for half the price they'd originally be at average stores. Plus, when you buy things in thrift stores, there's less of a chance someone out there has the same article of clothing haha! You can really develop a sense of individuality/originality and be much more creative with your style.

Yeah I love thrift shops! I often go there to find pieces that I can turn into something. Ex: old t-shirt that I can make into a loose tank top. I'm actually about to go to a local thrift shop with one of my friends. As long as you're willing to search around some, you'll be able to find some great stuff!
And no, it doesn't smell (as long as you wash it...washing is always good haha)

In London you only get a few good thrift stores. The ones in my area aren't that bad, but thrift stores in general here are generally looked down on. Though, they are definitely getting more popular and I guess it's because of this whole 'indie' trend or whatever. But I have a couple of friends who have found AMAZING things in thrift stores, like cute day dresses and tops. I have yet to discover a gem!

Might actually pop into a few near me today :)

You know, I've always been skeptical about thrift shopping.

A couple of weeks ago though I went with several friends and found some really amazing items. I don't think I'm ever looking back! Find some ones close to you and just give it a spin; if you have style, you will definitely see potential in a lot of the stuff there.

Thrift stores are wonderful, but you can't go in there looking for anything specific because nothing is very organized and you never know what you'll find.
Some of the clothes may smell like if they came from a smoker's household or if they just haven't washed the clothes in a while. If you wash them before you wear them(which I highly recommend, regardless of the smell) the smell is likely to fade/disappear.

hellz yeah! charity shops are too good, i mean yeah you have to look around and you won't always find a gem straight away, but take time and you'll find something :)
There's a charity shop really close to my mum's house and every month they have this thing called 'fill a bag for a pound' and you literally fill it with bags, clothes, belts etc you name it... then once you're finished filling your plastic bag (or bags, in my case) you just pay £1 for each one

Oh I love getting things at thrift stores. I'm currently wearing a cute dress I got for a dollar at a thrift store. I feel more unique in clothes I get at thrift stores because many times you can't buy it anymore. Also I don't feel guilty if I decide I don't like what I bought because it didn't cost me much.

If you're worried about the smell, there are.. higher end (?) thrift stores. For example, Wasteland in LA.

i can buy tons of clothes because it's cheap and mix em with the new stuff or high end items :) and i think by doing that you can have your own unique style not being a clone of anyone :)

i love thrifting! the stores don't seem dirty to me at all, i think a lot of people wash their clothing before they donate it...

you can go to higher end vintage stores that are smaller than like Goodwill, you don't have to look as much for great clothes in good repair, but it's a bit more expensive...not nearly as much as the original price though, so it's still great.

Definitely yes. I love Goodwill because I find great stuff there, it's cheap, and I get to feel good for helping out the special needs community. Plus thrifting is good for the environment since it keeps that stuff from going in the trash. :)

I've always adored thrift shopping and these days I actually own / operate one.
I know what you mean though, some op-shops have a funny smell & you can't really tell whether the garments are clean or not...have a look at a few & just return to the ones you feel comfortable in.
Everything in my store is washed / drycleaned & ironed etc before it hits the racks.
Thrifting is an amazing way of finding great stuff at great prices...and more often than not they're items that no-one else has!

BiG Yes to thrift stores. I go to urban outfitters and get ideas and then go thrifting. I've found vintage rompers, leotards, garter belts, numerous name brands, boots, rollerskates, crazy patterned things and etc.I'm pretty much addicted to thrifting and vintage shops. But I'm spending half the money I use to at malls or online. I must admit some of the things I've picked up have reeked, but you just wash it.

Big YES. The majority of my clothes are from thrift and second-hand shops -- I would never be able to afford all the nice things in my wardrobe if I bought everything new! I'm crazy about vintage, too. It's also a good place to find ugly clothes made of really nice materials (silk, wool, Pima cotton...) that you can reconstruct into something fabulous.

As for smells -- well, you should definitely clean everything before wearing it. Most clothes smell stale just because they were sitting in someone's closet for years without being worn, or were stored with mothballs.

best shop invented in the face of this earth is the thrift shop. it literally has everything. some my greatest finds are from a thrift shop. best ones would have to be the Kabunyan Ukay-Ukay right by Sogo at Cubao, Fashion Delight (the biggest ukay in Manila) somewhere along Gateway, in front of a block of Araneta center parking lot. Baguio has a range of cheapestg to the most expensive, but always doesnt disappoint.

dont hesitate, try it out. boil water and pour it on your buys then wash it with detergent to rid of that smell.

Yes they smell, but I suppose thats what the washing machine is for aha. and they are possibly the most amazing things on the planet, seeing as I hardly ever shop anywhere else, apart from carboot sales.
also, you'd never find anything in a charity shop which was supposedly 'vintage' like at the vintage stores that sell clothes that are actually new they are just made from a vintage pattern D: mostly all the vintage stuff in there is genuine, which i like.

i dont know, i think otherwise. thrifting is big here in the philippines, reason why we most likely have the best thrift stores because stuff that ought to fit a vintage shop can be found in our beloved ukay ukay instead (: plus when i get compliments from other people i honestly answer i got an item from an ukay ukay and voila they let it slip that they shop at the ukay too. taboo, i guess?

i've been there! its ok but more like for window shopping. i ended up buying something forgettable. lol. lot fo good stuff but im a cheapskate.

Thrift stores in the UK are awesome! But here you barely find something nice in thrift stores. Just really simple and not fashionable clothes. Only in the greater towns, there you often find wonderful things no one out there really have :D
Also I think thrift stores have something romantic. And really, most stores let the things get washed ^_-
But in some really small stores stuffed full of dresses the air really is often... consumed. What doesn't matter, as long as you find a cute dress from the 40's :D

As far as the smelly thing goes.. it depends on what store you go to. My store is pretty big and we get a lot of donations, so we're really picky about what we sell. Anything with rips, stains, or any kind of foul odor goes right in the trash!
